About Jean Carzou (1907–2000)

Born Karnik Zouloumian in Syria to an Armenian family, Carzou adopted his name from the first syllables of his birth name. Moving to Paris in the 1920s, he studied architecture but turned to fine art, supporting himself with street caricatures before rising as an illustrator for Hemingway, Camus, Rimbaud, and others. His linear, dreamlike style led to commissions for opera sets, chapels, the SS France liner, Château Mouton Rothschild labels, and the first living-artist French postage stamp in 1976. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he received the National Order of Merit, Hallmark Prizes, Grand Prize of Europe, and more. His paintings and prints are in major museums worldwide.

A pristine, collectible piece for Provence landscape lovers, modern art collectors, or fans of signed 1960s lithographs. Authenticity supported by the original pencil signature and portfolio provenance.
