About Jean Carzou (1907–2000)
Born Karnik Zouloumian in Syria to an Armenian family, Carzou adopted his artistic name from the first syllables of his birth name. After moving to Paris in the 1920s and studying architecture, he shifted to fine art, supporting himself with street caricatures before gaining recognition as an illustrator for major writers including Hemingway, Camus, Rimbaud, and Ionesco.
His distinctive linear style and dreamlike compositions led to prestigious commissions for opera houses, chapels, the SS France liner, Château Mouton Rothschild wine labels, and even the first living-artist French postage stamp in 1976. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he received the National Order of Merit, multiple Hallmark Prizes, Grand Prize of Europe, and numerous other honors. His works are held in major museums worldwide.
